A Laptop for College Student on a Budget?

It may seem like a challenge, but finding an affordable college laptop on a budget is certainly possible with a little research and a keen eye on your pocketbook.

As a parent purchasing a new laptop for your college student (congratulations btw!), there are a few laptop criteria to consider to fulfill your collegiates academic and entertainment needs.

Here are a few things to consider for performance:

  • Processor Speed
  • Hard Drive Space
  • RAM
  • Battery Life
  • Portability (Backpack...Laptop Carrier...Desktop Replacement?)
  • Laptop Weight & Screen Size
  • USB Ports
  • CD/DVD/BluRay Player
  • Integrated Wireless Access / Network Card

How can you balance all of these considerations with the needs of your student and keeping it light on your bank account?

At a minimum, your new college student should have enough laptop processor speed and RAM to effectively run all Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook). A Core i3 is, or a dual core processor from AMD / intel will certainly suffice.

In addition, your student should have a battery that will allow them to write their papers, take notes and more so they don't have to hook up to an outlet for at least 4 hours of operating time.

All in all, you should be able to find a suitable / affordable college laptop in the range of $350-$600.
